Why Tethys?

When we were trying to think of a new name for our company we found ourselves, one rainy Saturday afternoon, in the National Aquarium in Plymouth. Whilst there we learned that the Mediterranean Sea is believed to be a remnant of the Tethys Sea, which some 65 million years ago exisited between the super-continents Laurasia and Gondwana, before the opening of the Indian and Atlantic oceans during the Cretaceous Period. The name stems from the mythological Greek sea goddess Tethys, sister and consort of Oceanus, mother of the great rivers, lakes, and fountains of the world and of the Oceanid sea nymphs.

As our plan to 'sell up & sail' had already been hatched, and our target destination was the Ionian Sea in the eastern Mediterranean, we had found our new name! The only thing we didn't fully think through was that hardly anyone can pronounce it and we always have to spell it when on the telephone...
